Mark D. Johnson, of Lynchburg, Virginia, is an award-winning artist with passion for capturing the contemporary landscape and cityscape. Born and raised in Jamestown, New York, he is a graduate of North Park University in Chicago and has also lived in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He has been a professional web developer and user experience specialist since 1996. In 2001, he and his wife moved from Chicago to Lynchburg, where they are raising two sons, Lukas and Erik.
Working in oils, Mark is driven to pursue the right balance of detail and abstraction. Whenever possible, he loves to paint on location in the great outdoors and is endlessly fascinated with the infinite variety of color and light combinations that nature provides. While he developed as a self-taught artist, he has further advanced his study of art technique through workshops with nationally-known artists Ken DeWaard and Ron Boehmer.
He recently won two first-place awards in events at the 2016 Lynchburg Paint Out and was awarded Best in Show at the 2014 Georgia Morgan Civic Art Show at the Lynchburg Art Club.
